Hot Stone Massage

In hot stone massage, heated and oiled smooth volcanic stones are placed on key parts of the body and used as tools to give a luxurious massage that has many health benefits.

Specially chosen stones are heated in water until they reach the right temperature. The heat trapped in the stones warms and relaxes muscles and many people are happy just to revel in that warm comfort others prefer the therapist to go further and use deep-tissue techniques on muscles that have been deeply relaxed. Alternating hot and cold stones can be a very effective method of flushing toxins from muscles and promoting healing.

Warm stones dilate blood vessels, helping blood move blood faster round the body with a sedative effect on the nervous system. Cold stones stimulates the nervous system by causing the blood vessels to contract and increasing the lymph flow of waste materials round the body.

As well as feeling good, each massage stroke with hot stones is roughly equivalent to seven strokes by hand. The treatment can work at very deep levels, without the discomfort sometimes felt in standard deep-tissue treatments and is thus often preferred by people who do not enjoy deep-tissue work or who find it painful because of conditions such as fibromyalgia.

When aromatherapy oils are used in a hot stone massage, clients typically find this extremely relaxing, energising and luxurious. Some clients say they experience the energetic properties of the stones used and find this very grounding.

A hot stone massage usually lasts about an hour and a half.
