Acupuncture

Who or what does it treat?

Acupuncture is a safe treatment for all. It can be used safely alongside western medical treatment and drugs. For babies, children and some adults finger pressure rather than needles may be used.

Acupuncture is used to help with specific physical, psychological and emotional symptoms and these are considered within the context of life and medical history, character and family trends: -

Preventative medicine and general wellbeing - it is a superb preventative measure, promoting a feeling of well being and helping keep you in optimum health. People often feel better in themselves with treatment, and more resourceful in facing the world and the challenges of work, family or relationships. Hard to define problems - it can help you regain that 'lost spark', loss of energy and vitality, being vaguely 'out of sorts'. Many people find that it can also lead to increased energy levels, better sleep, circulation and appetite. Acute symptoms -general pain including back pain, muscle spasm, sciatica, tennis elbow, sports injury, headaches, post-operative trauma. Chronic (long-term problems) - migraine, asthma, allergies, digestive problems, skin problems, chronic fatigue, high blood pressure, arthritis, sinusitis, poor circulation, ME, IBS and other bowel problems. Gynaecological problems - post-natal depression, menopausal symptoms (hot flushes, night sweats etc.), pre-menstrual tension, male and female infertility, pregnancy management and for the relief of pain in childbirth. Psychological and emotional - stress, sleep problems, agoraphobia, panic attacks, anxiety states, depression, grief and addictions. Immune - acupuncture can be used seasonally to strengthen the immune system in order to prevent colds and flu.

How does it work?

Acupuncture works on the basis that our health is dependent on the flow of vital energy moving through the body in channels or meridians. When the body-mind energy is in balance and flowing smoothly, good physical and emotional health is maintained. On the other hand, pain or illnesses are the result of unbalanced energy.

The insertion of fine needles into specific locations on the body allows the flow of energy to be unblocked and balanced.

From Western medical point of view, acupuncture is thought to work by stimulating the nervous system to release chemicals such as endorphins and serotonins - and the chemicals help to change the experience of pain and stress. You don't need to 'believe' in acupuncture for it to work.

Animals, who know nothing of the placebo effect and who have no expectations of treatment respond very well to acupuncture.
